To Do an IME, or Not To Do an IME: Making the Right Decisions for a Section 12 Examination

October 1, 2026 12:00pm (CST)

Presented by: Michelle LaFayette & Julia Murphy

When do you need an IME? Which doctor should you use? Does the Commission trust the doctor? What is the reason for the IME?

During this session, we will discuss how to make your IME effective by making the right decisions from when to get an IME, what doctor you use and what questions you present to the doctor.

You only get one chance to use the IME to set up a medical causation defense for a claim, and it needs to be done right. We will give you tips for making sure you make the right choices.

In addition, we will discuss HB 5228, which was signed into law by Governor Pritzker at the end of August, and how those changes affect both Utilization Review and the IME process. We will provide some practical tips for when to get an IME and what to ask the IME physician in light of the legislative changes to Section 12.
